Every person living in Austria—Austrian citizens, EU/EEA nationals, and third-country nationals—must register their address with local authorities within three days of moving in. This registration, commonly called a Meldezettel (officially: Meldebestätigung), is required by Austrian law and necessary for accessing essential services.
Who must register
- Anyone moving to Austria from abroad
- Anyone moving to a new address within Austria
- Students and temporary residents (even for short stays)
Exceptions: Tourists staying in hotels (hotels register guests automatically)
Registration deadline
Within 3 days of moving into your accommodation
Penalty for non-compliance: Fines up to €726 (up to €2,180 for repeat offenses)
De-registration requirement
When you move out of your accommodation, you must de-register (Abmeldung) within three days before or after moving.
When registering a new address, the registration office can simultaneously de-register your previous address.
