The Privatier Permit (Settlement Permit – Gainful Employment Excepted) enables financially independent third-country nationals—retirees, investors, or individuals with passive income—to reside in Austria without working. This permit is ideal for those who can support themselves through pensions, investment income, or savings while enjoying Austria’s quality of life.

IMPORTANT: This permit is subject to a strict annual quota with extremely limited availability (only around 400 permits issued nationwide in 2025). Securing an application appointment is highly competitive

Who qualifies

  • Financially independent third-country nationals (no employment in Austria)
  • German language skills at A1 level or University degree holders
  • Health insurance covering all risks in Austria
  •  Adequate accommodation meeting local standards
  • Secured quota place

Work prohibition: You may not work in Austria—neither as an employee nor self-employed—while holding this permit.

Validity & Renewal

Initial permit: 12 months

After 2 years: 3-year validity if you have fulfilled Module 1 of the Integration Agreement (A2 German) and maintained continuous residence

After 5 years: Eligible for Permanent Residence Permit EU (requires Module 2 = B1 German + integration exam)
