Third-country nationals pursuing education in Austria—from primary school through university—require a residence permit matched to their educational level. The Residence Permit – Student covers higher education, while the Residence Permit – Pupil covers primary, secondary, and vocational schooling.
Residence Permit – Student
Who Qualifies:
- Enrolled at Austrian university, university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule), accredited private university, or teacher training college
- Degree program studies or non-degree program studies (minimum 40 ECTS credits, not solely language learning)
- University Preparation Programs or recognition studies (Nostrifizierung)
- Sufficient financial means: €722.58/month (under 24) or €1,308.39/month (24+) for 2026
- Health insurance covering all risks in Austria
Validity:
12 months (standard) or 24 months (mobility programs: Erasmus+, EU programs, inter-university agreements)
Renewal Requirements:
Minimum 16 ECTS credits per academic year, proof of continuing enrollment, financial means, and health insurance. Apply 3 months before expiry.
Work Authorization:
Up to 20 hours per week. Employer has to obtain a work permit from the AMS (no labour market test). Employment must not impair studies.
After Graduation:
12-month extension to search for employment in Austria with continued 20-hour work authorization.
Family Reunification:
Spouses, registered partners (age 21+), and minor children may apply for Residence Permit – Family Community. Students must demonstrate adequate financial means for all family members, health insurance coverage, and suitable accommodation.

Who Qualifies:
- Regular or extraordinary pupils at public schools or private schools with public-law status
- Students at schools for working adults (Schule für Berufstätige)
- Students at health and nursing care schools or social care profession schools
- Age 6 or older (no upper age limit)
- Sufficient financial means: approximately €722.58/month (under 24) or €1,308.39/month (24+)
- Health insurance covering all risks in Austria
